Open Source Needs Two Strong Arms

In a contrarian’s response to Ashlee Vance of <i>The New York Times</i> characterizing the business arm of an open source project as a “boil-in-the-bag” business model, Dana Blankenhorn argues that the creation of an open source commercial arm is “a significant event that helps developers, helps customers and can point the software in a new direction.”

In fact, Blankenhorn argues that an open source project needs two strong arms&#151;community arm and a business arm&#151;to succeed.
