International PHP Conference Schedule Posted

The schedule for the International PHP Conference (to be held November 5-8, 2006 in Frankfurt) has been finalized, with extensive in-depth sessions in both German and English. Sessions and workshops fall into the following topics:

  • General PHP
  • PHP & Business
  • PHP & Databases
  • PHP Design
  • PHP Extensions
  • PHP & XML
  • PHP-GTK
  • PHP Security
  • PHP Enterprise / Integration

Of course the lineup includes some PHP core developers as well as some enterprise heavy-hitters, so it’s sure to be a success. You can still take advantage of the Early Bird Discount (and the free Management Day) until September 29, 2006. For more info or to register, go to http://www.phpconference.com.

Who’s Got the Best CMS?

Packt Publishing has made a mission to find out. Not only do they want to hear who has the best CMS, they want to give $10,000 away to the top 3 CMSes. It’s pretty early in the game – they’re now accepting award nominations. After that, it goes to a vote, so if you’ve got a fave CMS that you think rawks, nominate it today! You can also read the full rules and regulations at the Packt site: http://www.packtpub.com/award/

Google Launches OS Project Hosting

Google announced at OSCON that they are now offering a hosting service for open source projects (akin to Sourceforge). To create a new project or search the projects already being hosted, go to http://code.google.com/hosting/. Ben Ramsey also provided a nice summary of what the overall project is all about, and his take on it from seeing Greg Stein’s presentation at OSCON.

PHP 5.2.0RC1 Released

Ilia Alshanetsky let us know that the first release candidate for PHP 5.2.0 has been released, and he encourages us to download and test it for potential bugs. You can read Ilia’s blog about it, then download your copy. As Ilia states, “Some of the key changes include things like 3 new extensions (filter, json and zip), the date extension had the rest of its functionality enabled, much work was done in terms of getting PHP 5.2 to run faster and more efficiently (in terms on memory usage). There have also been nearly 80 bug fixes made to existing functionality, which hopefully translates to a more stable release.”

Chorizo! Officially Born

The world of PHP Security just got a little easier for developers; Chorizo! was officially released this month. We’ve known it was coming (and the release surely doesn’t disappoint). Chorizo! will scan your site looking for potential security flaws and report back what it’s found. Better still, there is a free version you can use (for just one site) or a more advanced version, which offers more robust reporting and will scan more sites for you, among other things (for 289EUR). There really is no reason for you NOT to check this out: https://chorizo-scanner.com/.

ApacheCon 2006 Registration Open

Registration is now open for ApacheCon 2006, to be held October 9-13 in Austin, Texas. PHP-related speakers already on board include Rasmus Lerdorf, Andrei Zmievski, John Coggleshall, Theo Schlossnagle, and Adam Trachtenberg. Registration is an affordable $550 for the whole conference, so go to http://www.us.apachecon.com/index.html and sign up today!

Zend Framework 1.0 is on the Horizon

We learned from a few sources that Zend is planning on releasing its first official version of the Zend Framework at the Zend Conference in October, 2006. Andi Gutmans is at least hoping for the Release Candidate to be announced, according to an article on CNET. There have also been some opinions expressed regarding the tight integration between Zend and PHP, to which Andi also replied via his blog. Keep your eyes open in October, because it surely will bring some Zend Framework news.

PEAR/PECL Releases

I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t include what’s new at PEAR and PECL. Recent PEAR releases include:

And for PECL, we had:

As always, you can download or learn more about these packages at http://pear.php.net and http://pecl.php.net.

We’re switching formats for our “In Case You Missed It” so we’ll see you next month with our news and tidbits from the PHP World!
