PHP Weekender Announced

Tobias Schlitt let us know that the free of charge 2-day mini-conference in Dortmund has reached 50 attendees. It will be taking place October 7-8, 2006. The PHP Weekender site is in German, however so you’ll need to translate it to read it in English.

PHP Appalachia Wraps Up

Many people have asked me how PHP Appalachia fared, and of course my resounding answer was that it rocked. Actually, I wrote that “3+ days of collaboration, exchanging information, hiking, building campfires, and basically getting silly is now on my ‘highly recommended things to do before you die’ list. Not only does a gathering like this provide you with an outlet to expand and share your knowledge on a professional level, it gives you an opportunity to relax with like-minded people and just plain have a good time.” You can read my blog for more PHP Appalachia highlights. We will definitely be doing this again next year, so if you weren’t able to attend, there’s still hope.

Ning adds Video, Photos and Improved Groups

David Sklar blogged to let us know about the cool new things happening over at Ning. The addition of Ning Video, Ning Photos and a new and improved Groups section puts Ning near the top of the Web 2.0 list. As David put it, “I particularly like the embeddable slideshow that Ning Photos has, and its companion in Ning Videos, the embeddable player — so you can put photos or videos on your blog or wherever. Both apps let you e-mail in content from your phone, too. Ning Group has some spiffy HTML parsing and file upload features so you can share documents with folks and incorporate music, pics, or anything else in the forums.” For more info, you can read David Sklar’s blog or visit the Ning site yourself.

PHP5 Certification News
A few things to report on the PHP5 Certification: first, php|architect is now offering a pre-exam test you can purchase to see how you’d stack up to the real thing. It’s powered by Vulcan and is available for purchase on the php|a site. Best part is, you can purchase the pre-test in quantities of 1, 5 or 10 for a very affordable price. Secondly, Zend is offering a contest to win a trip to the Zend Conference to those who purchase the PHP5 Certification Package before October 15, 2006. Per their site, “For every purchase of the PHP 5 Certification, you will be entered into a drawing to win an all-expense paid trip to San Jose, CA to attend the Zend/PHP Conference and Expo: October 30 – November 2.” You’re going to get certified anyway, you may as well get a free trip out of it!

Proposals for the 2007 MySQL Conference & Expo Now Being Accepted

MySQL AB announced that they’ve opened the floor for proposals for their 2007 conference (to be held April 23-26, 2007 in Santa Clara, CA). The theme for the conference is “Scale to New Heights with MySQL” and proposals will be accepted until November 7, 2006. NuSphere Releases PhpDock

The team at Nusphere (makers of the fabulous IDE PhpED) has released an interesting new piece of software called PhpDock. According to the site, “PhpDock brings PHP Applications directly to end users running on Windows and removes any need for webserver, web browser or even the Internet connection. PHP Scripts can now run as regular Desktop Windows Applications. PhpDock is a Web Server and Web Browser combined in one small executable, capable of both running PHP scripts and rendering the resulting HTML in the application Window.” This is one I’ll definitely give a closer look to — for more information or to get your free trial of PhpDock, go to http://www.nusphere.com/products/phpdock.htm.

MS Open Source Web Development Summit

A select few (mostly) PHP core developers and movers & shakers were invited to Microsoft to discuss what lies on the horizon for MS’s Open Source movement. Wez Furlong, Ilia Alshanetsky, and Paul Reinheimer (among others) offered their thoughts and ideas on how the meetings went. Surprisingly, all of them had good things to say about Microsoft’s efforts so far and what lies on the horizon. I can’t believe I’m saying this but +1 for Microsoft.

How’s PHP6 Coming Along?

One word – fantabulous. Sara Golemon gave us a sneak peek at the progress of PHP6 in a recent blog post. It appears that the unicode support is coming along nicely, as well as many of the other issues that needed addressed such as register_globals and safe_mode. As Sara states, “So here we are. Headlong into a 22% completion of the function conversion, and a good half-way towards completing the project as a whole (most of the work that’s been done up to this point has been within the core, working on the functions that the functions call).” She also points us to the NEWS file for more detailed info on what’s been happening.

Joshua Eichorn Holds Webthumb Contest

In his recent blog post, Joshua Eichorn announces that he’s holding a Webthumb API contest for anyone interested.
“The top 5 projects will receive lifetime accounts with a 5000-per-month limit. I will also be giving away 500-per-month accounts to anyone who finds a bug in Webthumb and lets me know about it.” Check out his blog to see more details about the contest and to read more about the API.
