In Case You Missed It... The Week of February 13, 2006

Is Oracle Buying Zend?
An article that ran in Business Week let us know that Oracle was in talks to purchase JBoss, Sleepycat and Zend. Although the article states that "Spokespeople for Oracle, JBoss, Zend, and Sleepycat all declined to comment," it has since been confirmed that the Sleepycat deal is done. JBoss apparently still isn't talking about it (as noted by CNet) but what about Zend? Christian Wenz lets us know that the German division of Zend has sent an email around denying the reports, but I find it interesting that Zend's PR company tipped me off to the original article. How do you think the purchase would affect PHP core development? We've a thread going in the Echo Lounge, so feel free to pop in and voice your opinions.
Latest Podcast from Pro-PHP Explains Symfony
In his latest podcast on php|architect's Pro-PHP (pro-php.com), Marcus Whitney interviews the team behind the PHP5 Symfony framework (http://www.symfony-project.com/) that recently announced the release of Symfony 0.6. Marcus (as always) asks some great questions, and the podcast is definitely worth the listen. Some of the high points of the interview touched on the inevitable Rails topic. The Symfony team stated that while Symfony isn't meant to be PHP's answer to Ruby on Rails, the popularity of Rails brings attention to the power of frameworks in general. Other high points included its use of Ajax in making it more attractive to developers, its use of Propel (http://propel.phpdb.org/trac/) for the object abstraction layer, and the growing community (with an active IRC channel, forums and over 25,000 downloads). For an example of a site using Symfony, visit askeet.com. For more info on symfony and the awesome power of this framework, go to symfony-project.com, and to hear the full-blown podcast, go to http://podcast.phparch.com/main/index.php/episodes:20060210.
