Subject: How does indexing work ?

How does indexing work anyways ? What happens in the back ground ? Here is what I need :
Table 1 (id, keyword_name)
Table 2 (id, description)

I want to get each keyword from table 1 and compare with each description in table 2 . When I find a match, I want to store ID of table 2 in another table .

Will indexing help ? how ?
MY database is _ Mysql
