By: dmancan Subject: OO and maintainability I'm not a PHP programmer, but I've become interested in it because of its shift to a OO supported features. Yea, getting your head around OO designs, etc., can be tough, but when you get it, you realize that OO is beautiful--syntactically and aesthetically. I can't say the same for procedural based programs. I've studied Java and mach ii for Coldfusion (both OO) and you cannot beat OO for maintainability and development speed. (There is now MachII for PHP which is a OO framework which is simple to understand and beautiful to implement). You can add elements to a website with easy or fear of radically having to change things like when you start screwing with a procedurally written site. I have put together applications that leveraged 80% of previously written classes only having to change a few things. That cut my development time by 80%. When I realized it at the time I was grinning from ear to ear. When site maintenance is one of the most expensive parts of a website, why not write it in a way that facilitates this? When speed of development can win or lose contracts, save you days of programming, why not change. After reading some articles on PHP5, I'm really happy to see it's advancement into OO land. I'm happy that I can now use PHP on projects and leverage the smart PHP community of programmers and applications that are out there. |
