By: Paul Ramsey Subject: Open Source GIS Simon's "back to basics" approach is fun, but readers should know that doing GIS with open source tools does not necessarily require starting from scratch with GIS file format parsing and home brewed rendering. Check out Mapserver (mapserver.gis.umn.edu) and the PHP MapScript extension for a great open source internet mapping engine. Check out PostGIS (postgis.refractions.net) for a spatial database that Mapserver can use as a backend. Check out FreeGIS (www.freegis.org) for a comprehensive directory of all open source GIS tools. |
