You need a better teacher...
Flash has long since supported data exchange with MySQL and Access, through both php and asp.
Alas, there are many working examples of this throughout the internet.

I do recommend kirupa.com, since it explains everything in a simple manner.

Also, I have taught myself with some of FOE (friends of ed) books. His website allows you to download source files, php scripts and the .sql files to generate the tables. I do recommend you to buy the books, since they explain intensively all lines of code.

Of course there are many other good books and websites, like flashkit... Just browse and read your way past your teacher!!! Often we can learn more by ourselves than listening to some guy who believes he knows flash...

Actually, my girlfriend took a flash workshop and the teacher, whenever he did not know how to do something, replied that it was impossible... basically, under his assumption, flash did not have actionscript and was good for tweening alone!!!
