Subject: Correction - I think GMT time storage is ok!

Just to be clear on this point, I never meant to imply that storage in GMT was a bad idea -- au contraire! I think if you are to store the date in only one time zone, then this is THE one to use.

The problem that *may* arise is when you wish to display the time in another timezone (such as the user's local time zone and/or in the timezone in which the event occurred). A well-defined routine should handle this offset, but that's assuming it is well-defined (which nowadays is less of an issue, especially if you use something reliable like Oracle or IBM DB2 for this purpose).

However, if you ALSO store the time in the local timezone of the event in ADDITION to GMT, then that's one less thing to worry about. Note that I do not personally like storing or using a basic offset -- this is too simplistic and does not take into account Daylight Savings Time (which is not observed by all parts of the world, not even throughout the USA even) and the date is takes effect varies from country to country and year to year.

So to conclude: I think GMT is the best general purpose timezone, but I do think a local timezone of the event (along with an indicator that relates to that timezone rather than any offset) has added benefits.
