By: Kyle Simpson Subject: templating for php BY php??? I personally think that the process used by many of these templating engines is flawed in concept. You are basically saying, have PHP operate on other PHP, and create temporary PHP documents, and feed those back to the parser. This means that PHP makes it's 4-pass parsing of the original PHP document, and then has to make another 4-pass parsing on the temporary document. Yes, this is worst-case scenario, but it illustrates what I mean... you are doubling the work of the PHP ZEND engine. I think the best way to implement templating, WHICH I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE WITH, would be for some group to start an open souce project to write a mod to the PHP-apache module (or whatever other flavors there are) that allowed for a 5th "templating" pass to be performed by the ZEND ENGINE, before the traditional 4-pass parsing is done. The syntaxes and methods of all the available templating engines aside, any templating engine that uses PHP to work on PHP is going to make more work for the parser than is necessary. Such efforts I think are futile and will not scale well, simply on theory alone. |
