This idea about having 2 php builts its is nice despite the limitations of a cgi php.
However something that could also be a good solution for the same problem is instead of having to define for each site what php build it will use and run it as a cgi, you could have 2 php apache modules that each one parses DIFFERENT filenames!
For example you define in the httpd.conf for the first module to parse the *.php files and for the second module to parse a different filename like *.phs.
Of course dear friends this means that the site(s) that will be using the second module must have their php files renamed in (*.phs) plus their links and forms updated within them (this is very easy with a nice editor like Dreamweaver find and replace).
Take also in to consideration that php files are not required to end in *.php it can be whatever you want as long as in the httpd.conf you define them to be parsed with the php module.
