I use a log file for all of my error reporting. My error handler also watches out for nasty fatal messages and e-mails 'em to me.

If you've got telnet or ssh access, then log in and
tail -f <logfile>
and you've got a real-time watch on whats happening. The added bonus is that you won't have to interrupt such things as redirects using header() because you're not outputting text.
