You do have a point, but at this moment, my XML documents are WAAAY too complex to do with XSL, 'cose XSL is meant to present ready-made information, not to parse and figure out a larger picture out of a dataset of hints. That's where you really need a parser. Another approach would be to parse my XML into another XML that is "presentable", and then apply XSL to it, and I'm thinking about it, since it sounds to me like a good place to put caching in.

A final note - most of the template engines out there are simply terrible. None of them have shorthands to enable you to do simple jobs quickly, most of them have bad initial configuration which makes them a nightmare to start using, and worst of all, the only one that seems usable, UltraTemplates, can't even handle recursion.
