You may be new to PHP, but your instinct are good. Don't be coerced by what other people want/need. your system (Message # 1013280) gives you the same effect as the others described. As you do not have a development team, you have no need for a complex templating system.

PROS:
notice your system uses php to set up the template, php to call the template, php to store the variables, and php to write the variables. Using just simple php means your will be much faster then any template system which uses php to build complicated classes with complicated logic to act as search and replace engines on external files.

CONS:
however, doing what you are doing, embedding php in the .tpl files (which im assuming act as .php files), means they will most likely break the look of the page if using a wsywig, and will most likely be unreadable by any future html only team. This is sometimes unforgivable on a big project where there is little person to person communication with html only developers.

MORAL:
so if you don't need XML, or a complex Template System, then well, you don't need XML or a complex Template System. Stick with the easiest solution that works. and have fun.
