By: Michael Subject: Priorities priorities Wow. Interesting article. I have to object to quite a bit to how you listed the top items folks should consider when building a web application. On Usability: Listen to the geeks? Why? Are they the site users? Are they the domain experts for your web application? I am confused about this. Geeks designing will get a good applicaiton for geeks. The only way to achieve usability is to talk to the experts -- the users. Not any users. Speed? No. A myth that needs dispelling. Speed is just as much of a perception as a reality. Good performance should be maintained, but the real measure of a speedy application is the users' perception of how their time is being employed. For example, if you take 3 seconds to load a totally useless image (for branding purposes, etc.), the user will resent this more than taking 5 seconds to load something that is very useful and/or meaningful to them. This article is full of holes. I do not really recommend it as a basis for evaluating how to tackle your next project. |
