By: Jean-Marc Molina Profile Subject: RE: best of both worlds Hello, I agree with you. A good developer can be a designer. A good designer can be a developer. But it's hard to be a good developer and designer. For example a good developer will develop the perfect application (secure, fast...) because it knows everything about application development. But when it comes to write the graphic chart, select the proper colours, design fancy graphics... It's the job of a good designer or artist. I believe I am a good developer and a few years ago I asked to my chief what he would think if I decide to become a designer. He told me that he already had that problem. Because you can't just focus on one thing. Nobody really wants to be a specialist. Men are not meant to work as robot. We have tons of interests and hobbies, same for our job. We need to work on different projects, develop so design different things. As a result, in my opinion, a good developer should always think about design too. As a good designer should always think about development too. In a project, it means that people are able to communicate with each other even if they don't do the same thing. For example if you work as a game developer and that you work with animators. You have to speak their language, use the same terminology. I don't believe in specialization nor in "I am only a developer or designer". Last but not least, if you're really an only-way developer (no way you don't like the design-thingy) then just marry a designer :p - and get divorced a few weeks ago ^^... because of your lack of open-mindedness :) |
